Initial Testing

Today was our initial testing date.  It was horrible.

Ok, so that’s a little dramatic, but have pulled the wool over my eyes for so long, today finally allowed me to see just HOW far out of shape I am.  I stand 5′10” so I’ve always been fairly tall for a girl.  That also means that I’ve been able to hold more weight on my frame than my 5′4” sister without it being terribly noticable.  Today I weighed in at 224 lbs.  That, folks, is the highest weight that this girl has ever weighed.  I am really stiff…have lost my flexibility and my sit and reach was pretty pathetic.  I was only able to do 23 girl pushups, and TEN situps.  I nearly cried during the last 15 seconds of the situp test as I finally realized what I have become this past year.

We did the mile run, which was also disheartening.  I ran the mile in a slow 12:08.  In January I did a bootcamp class and ran it in 10:00.  What a difference.  Sorry about the melodramatic post here, but it’s kind of the wake-up call I’ve been needing to get things together.  I can confidently say that my current state is more painful than the changes I need to make.  So…onward we go.

Farrell’s (FXB) does testing at three different times during the 10 weeks: intial, 5 week, and 10 week.  Therefore, I have made goals that fit in nicely with those increments:

5 Week Goals:

1) Lose 5% body fat

2) Complete 30 pushups

3) Complete 20 situps

4) Run the mile in 10:30 (cut down 1:38 from my time)

5) Attend ALL classes & do not stray from the meal plans

Class begins on Monday.  It will be tough…but luckilly I am paired with a great coach and the tools that I need to make myself successful.  I’m excited to see what the journey brings!

Shapin’ Up

Written 5/25/09

It’s crunch time, less than four months before our wedding.  The fiance and I enrolled in Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping (FXB) and I am terribly excited to begin kicking my behind.  The program is ten weeks long with 6 45-minute workouts per week.  The workouts alternate between kickboxing and resistance training.  We got some martial arts shoes with our package, they are so comfy and make me feel hardcore, haha! :)

I am so committed that I have decided to give up my summer laziness in lieu of intense 5am workouts each day.  I realize that this is a bit crazy, but I am definitely a morning workout person.  Since I have the summer off from teaching, I will have plenty of time to focus on ME, something I haven’t done in quite awhile.

My goals are quite ambitious and outside of what is typically recommended for weight loss (2 lbs/week).  At the end of the ten weeks, I’d like to lose 35 lbs.  The way I justify this is that I am pretty damn over weight and out of shape.  In the past, I have dropped the initial 20 lbs pretty quickly.  I also want to increase my cardio fitness with running more frequently.  There is a lake near our house with very nice, wide trails that surround it.  I’d like to eventually be able to run the entire 3.5 miles.

Saturday is our before picture day, not really looking forward to that.  We also have to do baseline testing such as sit and reach, push ups, sit ups, and the 1 mile run.  I know where I’m at…there will be no surprises.  However, it still is rather depressing.  At least there’s only one place to go from here!
